In the early stages, treatment is reduced to a change in diet and lifestyle. Fatty liver in most cases will not lead to complications that are life-threatening, but it can cause numerous health problems.
The liver is the largest organ in our abdominal cavity, and it is located on the right side of the abdomen, just below the diaphragm. In adults, it weighs 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms. It is soft and has reddish-brown color. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, useful sugar and fat that our body needs for normal functioning.
In the liver, harmful fats from food are converted into substances that we need or are filtered for removal from the body. However, if the amount of fat in the body is higher than five per cent of its total mass, then it is a disorder known as fatty liver. In this case, there is an inflammatory process, and it is possible to enlarge the organ.
It is a condition that usually occurs between 40 and 60 years and is not considered a serious disease. However, if the liver steatosis is not seen on time, it can lead to serious diseases, such as cirrhosis, which can be life-threatening. In this case there is scarring of the liver that, despite the fact that the organ can regenerate, it cannot be repaired. All this makes it difficult for it to perform its most basic functions, which can cause various problems in the body.
