Sweet Flag is a domestic plant, which can be found along streams, swamps, ditches or wetlands.
This extremely medicinal aromatic plant blooms from June to August, and can grow to about a meter in height. The flower cluster is located on the bottom of the stem and it is elongated, cylindrical and has a very thick yellow-green flowers. The rhizome is on the long horizontal roots and it is highly branched and long lanceolate leaves grow from it.
In the spring or late autumn, we collect rhizome – it is required to be well washed, cut and dried on artificial heat. Thus processed, sweet flag is stored in a dry place.

Preparation of sweet flag
Sweet flag contains: glycoside, alkaloids, starch, essential oil, resin and some traces of choline. Its beautiful and aromatic scent is very reminiscent of cinnamon, so, except for the purposes of direct treatment, it can also be used in the kitchen, where it can serve as a substitute for cinnamon.
The alcohol in which sweet flag is leavened is used as a mouthwash. It strengthens the gums and it is extremely healthy to drink it.
However, in most cases, sweet flag is prepared as a tea, with cold topping.
To make this tea, put a small teaspoon of dried roots of sweet flag in a cup (2.5 dl), and pour it over with cold water. Let it stay for 8-12 hours (preferably overnight). After that, the tea is necessary to be strained and a little warmed up, and if you are curing diseases of the stomach and intestines, it is best to take a few sips of it before and after a meal.
The tea is also used against bloating and to disinfect the lungs
You can also prepare a refreshing bath from sweet flag. Put 200 grams of rhizome in 5 liters of water and leave it for 12 hours. Then, boil it and pour it into the tub. You should stay in the water for 20 minutes. After that, you need to cover up well and go to bed, staying for at least an hour – during which time you can drink the tea of sweet flag.
Sweet flag can also be prepared as juice. The fresh rhizome should thoroughly be cleaned and drained – it is used three times a day, one teaspoon with a little water, 15 minutes before a meal.
For diseases of the nerves, oil from sweet flag is recommended. 200 grams of chopped roots are mixed with a liter of olive or corn oil. The root should be in the oil for 30-60 days with occasional shaking. The oil is used for massaging the painful places several times a day. In melancholia and hypochondria, massaging the temples, neck and places behind the ear is recommended.

Mix 20 grams of sweet flag rhizome, lemon balm, mint, chamomile and fennel. Pour 2 dl of boiling water over a spoonful of this mixture, cover it and drink it after a meal.
Tea to stimulate appetite
The combination of herbs that is obtained by mixing 20 grams of sweet flag rhizome, centaury, bitter clover and peel of bitter orange is recommended for stimulating appetite. This mixture should be placed in 1 liter of brandy and keep it like that for eight days, shaking the mixture every now and then. It is necessary to drink one tablespoon, three times a day, half an hour before meals.
Tea against gastritis and ulcers
It is necessary to grind and eat sweet flag and liquorice (licorice) three times a day before meals, taking one teaspoon in a strong chamomile tea.
Also, you can use a mixture of sweet flag, linseed, licorice and plantain (per 100 grams). Pour 300ml boiling water to two tablespoons of this mixture, stir and let it stay for half an hour. Then strain and drink half an hour before meals, three cups of freshly prepared tea per day.
Tea against bronchitis and asthma
Mix 100 grams of sweet flag, ground ivy, coltsfoot, and anise. Pour 700 milliliters of boiling water over five tablespoon of the mixture. Leave it for half an hour, strain it and drink it throughout the day.
